Clubs scramble for Uzoenyi’s signature

Petite Super Eagles striker, Ejike Uzoenyi has rebuffed advances from South African Premier Soccer League clubs because he would not want anything to distract him from his primary assignment here in South Africa – winning the African Nations Championship.

’’You know when you dance very well, people spray money on you, but I don’t want to talk about anything transfer now, until after the tournament. All I can confirm is that there have been advances but I have told them to wait,’’ Uzoenyi said.

The Enugu Rangers player said his priority now is how to help his country lift its first Chan trophy. ‘’We have a task on our hands. We still have two matches to the trophy and this means we need all the concentration required to achieve the task.’’

D'banj becomes a farmer, to establish farm soon

The Koko master, Dapo Oyebanjo, D’banj, has suggested that he will take into farming as part of his role with the 'ONE's Year of Agriculture' campaign.

``ONE’’ is an international, non-partisan, non-profit, advocacy and campaigning organisation aimed at eradicating poverty and preventable diseases in the world through public awareness.

D’banj disclosed this in an interview at the launch of ``ONE’s Year of Agriculture’ Campaign” that his action was to explore another area of opportunities.

D’banj said that during his meeting with the ``ONE Organisation” in South Africa, he was convinced that agriculture was the only way forward for Nigeria and Africa.

``If we focus on agriculture in the next five, six, seven, 10 years, Africa can actually be feeding the rest of the world.  Agriculture is actually everything that we live; food is life; agriculture is life. So, for me, I will be doing everything in my power to make sure that the youth, my generation, they see what I have seen and they get informed as I have," he said.

The Oliver twist crooner added that he planned to establish his own farm, noting that farming is no longer for the poor.
"We would create our wealth ourselves, so you can call me a farmer now. My role is to get involved and like a joke I’m getting involved fully. Maybe I’m going to have my own farm so that when I’m talking to youths and saying listen I am a farmer as well.  So, everything we would be doing to just let them know that ``oh boy’’ you can wear a Rolex and still be a farmer,’’D'banj submitted.

Chime, Deputy at war over poultry farm

OFFICIALS of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority and Ministry of Environment, yesterday, invaded the official lodge of the state deputy governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, and carted away over 3,000 chickens and about 40 crates of eggs from his poultry on the orders of the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo.

But Chief Press Secretary to governor, Chukwudi Achife, said it was regrettable that the deputy governor chose to ignore all entreaties, including a government directive, to relocate the birds, especially one that had to do with the health of the people.

The ECTDA and Environment Ministry officials, who were led by their commissioners, Messrs Ikechukwu Ugwuegede and Nnaemeka Chukwuone respectively, arrived the lodge at about 1p.m. yesterday to inform the deputy governor of the Chief of Staff’s order to evacuate the birds and demolish the poultry which the government said constituted public health hazard.

Deputy governor watches

Onyebuchi, who was with his wife and personal aides, including security officers attached to his office at the lodge which had been under renovation since September 2012, did not resist the action of the officials who later brought in four trucks and evacuated the chickens to an unknown destination.

When the government officials mobilised by the two commissioners could not evacuate the entire birds, Ugwuegede mobilised more uniformed officials of his ministry who spent about an hour evacuating the birds and the crates of eggs into the four trucks and took them away.
Government’s position

The statement read:  “In recent times, the stench from the poultry had been pervading the Government House and causing much discomfort to all workers within the Government House, including, of course, the governor.

“Following persistent complaints and appeals from staff of the government, the Permanent Secretary, Government House, Mr. GOC Ajah, was instructed to invite the Ministry of Environment and Government House clinic to inspect the poultry.

“Both the Ministry and Government House medical personnel came out with a verdict that the place was not being well kept and constituted a health hazard to people working in the Government House.

“Based on this report, the Permanent Secretary has, on a number of occasions, taken Government House staff to clean up the poultry.

“However, when the problem persisted, it was brought to the notice of the governor who then directed relevant government officers to communicate the health concerns to the the deputy governor with a view to having him maintain the place properly or relocate the birds.”

“The deputy governor did not comply with any of these directives after several correspondences, even as the stench from the poultry continued to assault people working in Government House.

“Government then directed the commissioners in charge of the Enugu Capital Territory and the Ministry of Environment to evacuate the birds to a safe place and clean up the place.

“It is regrettable that the deputy governor chose to ignore all entreaties, including government’s directive to relocate the birds, especially one that had to do with the health of the people.

“Government’s directive was carried out by officials of both ministries without incident. The birds were evacuated to a safe place and would be handed over to the deputy governor whenever and wherever he chooses.

“  It is important to also state that the deputy governor does not currently live in the premises as it is being renovated by the government.”

Deputy's Reactions

“The haste of the two letters shows a mind filled with malice and bent on making mischief, the two letters were delivered to His Excellency’s office, signed for and received on the same day, December 27, 2013.  One is a “Notice” and the other “Final Notice.

“His Excellency, the deputy governor also observed that your said letters are replete with falsehood.  The official residence of the deputy governor is part and parcel of Government House and no Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) is, to the best of the knowledge of His Excellency, issued in respect of it.

“His Excellency challenges you to produce or at least cite its reference number since this is the basis of your action.  You may also consider revoking the said C of O.

“Just to put the records straight, His Excellency has asked me to inform you that the said poultry is operated within a section of the deputy governor’s residence designated and fenced out as Agriculture Unit – same as the Agric Unit of the Government House where a bigger poultry farm, a piggery and a ranch exist. His Excellency, the deputy governor operates a vegetable farm within that section and no mention was made to of it. Or, is “vegetable farm” within the purpose clause of the C of O?

“The structure for the said poultry farm was inherited by His Excellency from his predecessors in office who also used same for the same purpose. His Excellency has operated the same poultry farm since 2008 with technical support from ENADEP and Commercial Agriculture Programme of the State Ministry of Agriculture.

“There is no record of a letter from you to His Excellency, bringing to his attention, complaint of any environmental or health hazard from the said poultry since 2008. This is because there is none.

“The poultry is operated within the best international practices.  His Excellency’s members of staff are living in the Boy’s Quarter, just meters away from the poultry and they have not complained of any inconvenience since 2008.

“Finally, it is the advice of His Excellency that you do not allow the love of power to dominate the power of love.”

Mu’azu is not under EFCC investigation, says PDP

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) says its new National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, is not being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mr Olisa Metuh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary of the party, made the position known in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.
``Such reports linking Mu’azu with the EFCC investigation publications are mischievous and calculated to mislead the public. They are completely false and baseless,’’ he said.
Metuh said the reports were part of a scheme by PDP’s opponents to distract its national chairman from ``his determination and commitment to rebuild and reposition the party as the pre-eminent party in Nigeria’’.
He said it was however true that Mu’azu, at the end of his tenure as Bauchi State Governor, was, like many other governors who were leaving office, invited by the EFCC.
``This was to respond to some petitions. But Mu’azu was never invited again by the EFCC on any other issue.
``The succeeding government, elected on the platform of the defunct ANPP in 2007, instituted a Panel of Inquiry.
``The panel went ahead to issue a White Paper against Mu'azu in spite of the fact that he did not appear before it.
``In the exercise of his lawful rights, Mu’azu challenged the entirety of the White Paper in suit no BA/295m/2009 at the Bauchi State High Court, No. 1.
``The suit was heard by no other judge than the Chief Judge of Bauchi State, Justice Mohammed Zango who, after hearing all the arguments, set aside the whole findings and quashed it into the dustbin of history.
``Consequently, Mu’azu remains cleared of all allegations as contained in the said White Paper,’’ the PDP national publicity secretary said.
He said it was therefore highly misleading for any person to make statements or sponsor publications purporting that Mu’azu was under investigation or any form of trial whatsoever.
Metuh urged those behind the statements and publications to desist from such and to bear in mind that there was divine judgment for those who bear false witness against the innocent.
He said Mu’azu was duly appointed as the PDP national chairman and was totally committed to performing his duties, irrespective of attempts from any quarter to distract him

How Barca paid(?) €86.2m for Neymar- new Barca President

Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed on Friday that Neymar's parents were given €40 million of the total €57.1m transfer deal in the new Barcelona president's first press conference.

Outgoing president Sandro Rosell resigned from his post on Thursday, just a day after it was announced that a complaint by Barca socio Jordi Cases for misappropriation of funds in the deal would be investigated in the Spanish High Court.

Cases' lawyer, Felipe Izquierdo, then revealed on Thursday that the complaint could be extended to include both Bartomeu and the club's economic vice-president, Javier Faus.

With that in mind, Bartomeu came prepared on Friday for his first meeting with the media and presented a series of documents showing the breakdown of the fee, which finally made official that Neymar's mother and father had got a bumper pay-off.

"I want one thing to be absolutely clear," he told the media at a press conference at Camp Nou. "Neymar's transfer cost €57.1m."

That is the figure quoted by Barcelona from the outset and the club were sticking to their story on Friday. However, a total breakdown of the monies paid out by the Blaugrana showed the Catalans had in fact invested €86.2m in the Brazilian forward, without including wages.
The €86.2m can be broken down as follows: €57.1m euros for the transfer itself (of which €40m went to the player's parents), €10m as a signing-on fee, €2.7m in commission, €4m in marketing, €2.5m for Neymar's foundation and €9.9m in scouting and collaborative deals with Santos.

"I guarantee we have not lied," Bartomeu said, claiming the other figures were not included in the transfer itself. "Football games are won on the field of play and we have always been highly responsible in the way we have dealt with our contracts. My colleagues have a high level of expertise."

The new Barca chief was asked on a number of occasions why the club had chosen to reveal the figures now and not while former president Rosell remained in charge.

"We had a confidentiality agreement and we were unable to disclose that information until now," he explained.

"It is thanks to Neymar's father, who got in touch with us earlier today, that we have been able to reveal these figures. He called us and allowed us to reveal the information because he thought the club's current situation was unfair."

Barcelona also revealed that Neymar will earn €44m in wages over five years, not including his signing on fee. He will also receive a €2m bonus for finishing in the top three on the Ballon d'Or shortlist, but currently has no agreement to claim any extra money for winning titles with the Catalan club.

2014 World Cup: Brazilian Prostitutes Learning English

In advance of the 2014 World Cup, Brazil is getting ready for its close up. And Brazilian prostitutes are getting ready for their own close ups — with a lot of English-speaking tourists.

As the country braces for an influx of soccer fans, according to Reuters, Brazilian prostitutes are signing up for free English classes being offered by a prostitute advocacy group in Belo Horizonte, one of the cities slated to host World Cup matches. “This is important for the dignity of the work, the women need to be able to negotiate a fair price and defend themselves,” Cida Vieira, president of the Minas Gerais state Association of Prostitutes, told Reuters. Prostitution is legal in Brazil and, as with past World Cups, they’re expecting a booming business during the soccer tournaments.

The group is seeking to expand their language offerings to include offer Spanish, French, Italian and even Portuguese classes (some of the city’s sex workers are immigrants who do not know Brazil’s primary language). Vieira said that 20 sex workers have already signed up for the courses and she expects at least 300 of the group’s 4,000 members to follow suit.

Olamide, Phyno to drop single from '2 Kings' Collabo soon

Contrary to insinuations that the proposed collabo album of indigenous rappers, Olamide and Phyno might not see the light of the day, an insider has confirmed that the artistes are serious about the project and might likely drop a single or two from the album before the end of the first quater of the year.

"Olamide and Phyno are serious about the collabo and the likelihood that a single will drop very soon is certain. I am sure that this will not go the way of other proposed collabo," the confidant to one of the artistes said.
It will be recalled that Olamide, who released his third album, Baddest Guy Ever Liveth, late 2013, broke the news via Twitter.

“Next album 2kings Olamide and Phyno. They are not ready … Start anticipating,” he tweeted on Thursday.
Phyno confirmed the news when he posted Olamide’s tweet on his Instagram page.
Olamide mainly raps in Yoruba, while Phyno raps in Igbo.

The collaborative album, if it sees the light of the day, may be the first of its kind in Nigerian music industry. Several artistes have recently announced plans to release collaborative albums – Wizkid and Wande Coal, Davido and MayD – but none has materialised yet.

Olamide and Phyno had a good run in 2013. Apart from his album, Olamide headlined concerts and won the much coveted Next-Rated award at the Headies. Phyno’s hit single, Man of the Year, positioned him as an artiste to look out for in 2014

The two had earlier collaborated: first on Phyno’s ‘Ghost mode’, then on Olamide’s ‘Dope money‘.

Islam believes Jesus is coming again- Imam

The Imam ofg Federal College of Technology, Yaba Mosque, Imam Saeed Salmon has said that Islam also believes in the second cominof Jesus Christ, emphasising that any Muslim who does not believe in it is not a true follower of Prophet Muhammed.
Salmon who made this known at a special lecture held at the Lagos Central Mosque, Tinubu, said,  Jesus is a messenger of God and would still return to a mosque in Damascus.

“The second coming of Jesus Christ is a doctrine that every Muslim must believe. The teachings of prophet Muhammed talks extensively about this.

The Qua’ ran Chapter 4:157-159 teaches this but the teachings of Islam does not support that Jesus was killed or resurrected, rather, he was raised by Almighty Allah to his majesty.”

“Jesus is coming again to refute the claim of the Jews that he was crucified and to correct the doctrine of the Christians that he is the son of God.

Again, the second coming of Jesus is to establish that there is a close relationship between Prophet Muhammed and Jesus himself.”
The Chief host and organiser of the lecture, Amir Ajala Kamardeen noted that he is under the obligation as a true Muslim to educate the public and to correct any  misconception about Islam.

“Jesus is a prophet and messenger of Allah and as a true Muslim, we are bound to believe all prophets of Allah.

The holy book ,Qur’an points to the fact that the second coming of Jesus Christ is a sign of end time but there are some group of Muslims in Harvard University and in Cairo known as the fatimists and also Ahmadists who are saying otherwise, so, I have put it upon myself to correct them.”

Chelsea target Salah after agreeing £37m Mata deal with Manchester United

Chelsea are targeting Basel winger Mohamed Salah after agreeing to sell Juan Mata to Manchester United for £37 million.

Mata is scheduled to undertake a United medical on Thursday as he puts the finishing touches to his club-record transfer to Old Trafford.

There was a breakthrough in talks between Chelsea and United on Wednesday, with the London club giving the 25-year-old permission to miss first-team training in the morning.

Barring any late hiccups, Mata is expected to make his debut for David Moyes’ team in their Premier League clash against Cardiff City next Tuesday.

Chelsea, who have had an approach for Wayne Rooney rejected in the January window, are set to make an immediate attempt to reshape their squad by trying to prise Salah from Swiss champions Basel.

The 21-year-old Egyptian made a series of eye-catching appearances in the Champions League before Christmas, scoring the equaliser for Basel in their unexpected 2-1 win at Chelsea in the group stage and repeating the feat in the 1-0 win at St Jakob Park.

The Londoners are prepared to reinvest around €12m, a quarter of the Mata money, in Salah although Basel value the wide player at closer to €18m.

Chelsea's strong interest could scupper Liverpool's bid to sign the Egyptian this month.

They will make their move after negotiating a big profit on Mata, who cost €28.7m when he signed from Valencia in 2011.

Abramovich's girlfriend poses on 'half naked black woman' chair, apologises

The girlfriend of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has said sorry after sitting on a chair made to look like a half-naked black woman on Martin Luther King Day.
Fashion website Buro 24/7 used the offensive image of Dasha Zhukova to illustrate an unrelated interview about the former model’s new magazine, Garage.

However the picture was posted as America celebrated their national holiday to remember civil rights leader Dr King on Monday.
“This is incredibly racist,” Organising for Women’s Liberation tweeted after discovering the pictures.
While Musa Okwonga wrote: “The slave chair is the perfect metaphor for how black women are treated by the fashion industry.”

Alex Tunzelmann added: “Even in the grim, tasteless world of fashion photography, this revolting racists image published on MLK Day! - stands out.”
Zhukova quickly deleted the image from her Instagram page after she was met with a barrage of irate comments while Buro later cropped out the chair in the picture.

And the 32-year-old apologised, saying: "I utterly abhor racism, and would like to apologise to anyone who has been offended by this image."
The photograph showing her sitting in the shocking chair was published "completely out of context", she said

Zhukova and Abramovich, who is worth £8.5 billion, have two children Aaron Alexander, four and 10-month-old Leah Lou.

Rivers crisis: Ikwerre group rises against Amaechi, wants CP Mbu to stay (Photos)

The popular Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway was shut down for several hours yesterday by anti-Rotimi Amaechi protesters from the four Ikwerre local governments, comprising Ikwerre, Emohua, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt, who demonstrated in solidarity with the much-criticised state Police Commissioner, Mbu, Joseph Mbu.
They were protesting against the call by Rivers State Government and its sympathisers that Mbu should be redeployed to another state.

The demonstrators, indigenes of Ikwerre ethnic nationality operating under the auspices of Ikwerre Peoples’ Assembly, threatened to shut down all entry points into Rivers State, including the international airport located within the Ikwerre community, all the oil wells, flow stations and oil facilities in any of the four local governments of the Ikwerre ethnic stocks.

Some of the placards read: ‘Thank you I-G for leaving Mbu for us’; ‘We have a brother in Jonathan’, ‘A South- South Man Cannot Betray His Brother’; ‘Tinubu Enough is Enough’; ‘We Will Not Support Impunity’; and ‘Leave CP Mbu Alone’.
Spokesman of the group, Chima Boms, said: “CP Mbu in our estimation has performed creditably well and deserves commendation. We therefore request that he continues to serve in Rivers State for the good of the people.

“Consequently, the Ikwerre Peoples’ Assembly will resist any attempt to redeploy CP Mbu as commissioner of police Rivers State as such move will take us back to the dark era.”
Boms added: “The resumption of Mbu as commissioner of police in Rivers State has effectively put to an end to the reign of impunity, lawlessness, harassment and the abuse of the fundamental rights of the citizens by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“Mbu since resumption of office has demonstrated an uncanny zeal, dexterity and enthusiasm in the art of policing the state, hence the peaceful and serene atmosphere pervasive today in the state, which ironically and indeed inexplicably does not go down well with the Governor of the state.
“Rivers people and indeed Nigerians will recall, prior to the resumption of Mbu as commissioner of police in Rivers State, the indiscriminate arrest and illegal detention, harassment and abuse of the fundamental rights of the citizens by Governor Amaechi.”

The group claimed that in the face of extreme provocation, Mbu has demonstrated a high sense of professionalism in ensuring safety of lives and properties in the state.
“Any redeployment of CP Mbu at this time will be asking for the total shut down of all entry points to Rivers State including the international airport which the Ikwerre people play host to, and all the oil wells, flow stations and oil facilities located in Ikwerre land.”
