19-year-old housewife in court for allegdly causing her mate to miscarry

The police in Katsina state on Thursday arraigned a 19-year-old housewife, Aisha Idris, in a Katsina Chief Magistrates' Court, for allegedly causing her mate, Sa'adatu, to miscarry.

The police prosecutor, Sgt. Okolo Usman told the court that the complainant (Sa'adatu) and the accused were wives of Malam Idris of Shinkafi village in Katsina local government area.

Usman said the complainant, in a statement she made to the police, said that they had a misunderstanding which led to a fight.

According to him, Aisha took a pestle and hit Sa'adatu on back where she fell down and in the process, had a miscarriage.

Usman said that the offence was contrary to section 234(a) of the Penal Code Law.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that if convicted on the charges, the accused could spend up to five years in prison or get an option to pay a fine or both.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Mustapha Hassan admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 and adjourned the case to Sept. 12, for further mentioning.
