3 security men docked over alleged N1.4m theft, burglary

For allegedly stealing money and laptops valued at N1.4 million, three security guards were on Thursday arraigned in Lagos.

The trio of Kabiru Ichoji, 47; Peter Idoko, 22; and Hezekiah Akpan, 23, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing at an Oshodi Magistrates' Court.

Ichoji resides at No. 162, Ipaja Road, Ipaja; Idoko lives at No. 44, Onisegun St., Kosofe, Ketu, while Akpan stays at No. 1, Holy Saviour Close, Ejigbo, all in Lagos.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde alleged that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 26 between 12.00 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. at Emma Global Concept Ltd, Royal Exchange Complex, Oshodi.

He told the court that the accused burgled the office and stole three laptops, three mobile phones and cash worth N1.4 million.

According to Olatunde, the accused also made away with N657, 280, 4,803 dollars and 400 pounds.

``Workers resumed work the following day to discover that the burglar proofs of the office had been tampered with.

``The accused admitted that they were on duty on the day the incident took place, but denied any knowledge of the theft and burglary," he said.

The offences, Olatunde noted, contravened Sections 285, 308 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides for three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 308 prescribes a three-year jail term for burglary.

The accused, however, entered a plea of not guilty.

Following the plea, the Magistrate, Akeem Fashola, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety each in like sum.

He adjourned the case to Oct. 8 for mention.

Information from NAN was used in this report.
