Job opportunities: THE UNION NEWSPAPERS NEED YOU



Are you in need of a job or you want to pursue a career in the media? Lucky you as The Union newspaper, is a publication of Today Publishing Company Limited, located in Ikeja, Lagos needs you.

The advert reads:
Owing to expansion, our newspaper group has vacancies for the following categories of workers:
Business Development
Marketing Manager: The candidate must hold a university degree and a minimum of 15 years cognate experience in a publishing house. The ideal candidate should be computer-friendly and proficient in the use of ICTs. He/she must possess the ability to develop a first-rate brand-building force from the scratch. The successful candidate will oversee the advertising and sales force of the organization.

Business Development Officers: Persons for this position must be entrepreneurs and be ready for multi-task business development challenges. Cognate experience in marketing media space is essential.

Editorial
Deputy Editors: Applicants must hold good university degrees and a minimum of 10 years professional experience as journalists. The candidate must have held positions not less than a line editor’s. The ideal candidate must be creative, able to work with minimum supervision and supervise editorial projects under tight time deadlines. The candidate must be sound in written and spoken English.

News Editors: Same as for Deputy Editors above.
Asst Feature Editors: Same as above, with minimum of seven years experience.
Feature writers: Same as above, with minimum of five years experience as a reporter/writer.
State Correspondent: for (Bayelsa, Kano, Plateau, Bauchi, Sokoto states): Same as above, with minimum of five years experience. The ideal candidate must show good understanding of their states.
Politics Correspondents: for Lagos and Abuja: Same as above with minimum of three years experience as a political reporter.

Business Correspondents: Lagos and Abuja; covering money and capital markets, maritime, tourism and services, as well as agriculture. Correspondents should have experience of the relevant beats, with a minimum of five years experience.
Judicial Correspondents: The ideal candidates must be well versed in the judicial process and should have between four and seven years experience on the beat.

Crime Reporter: The reporter should have no less than two years experience on the beat.
Sports Reporters: Sports reporters should have excellent knowledge of their beats and have between two and five years experience
Art Correspondents: The ideal candidate should have an experience of no less than three years.
Chief Sub-editors and sub-editors: Candidates for these positions must be experienced and able to work under pressure. A minimum of 10 years of experience is required for this job. Exceptional applicants with less years of experience may be considered.

Fashion Writers: Writers should have minimum of two years experience, reporting and writing on style and lifestyle news and trends, society and fashion.
Cartoonists: Illustrators must have distinguished strokes and possess a minimum of three years experience.
Reporters: Reporters must be fresh University graduates not more than 27 years of age.
Graphics and Production
Page Designers: Page designers must have experience working in newspapers. The ideal candidates must be versatile in the use of MSWord, Photoshop and Indesign.
Basic qualifications:
  • All positions require a minimum of BSc/HND from  recognized institutions, but consideration may be given to applicants who possess lower qualifications but show sufficient expertise in their fields. The ideal candidates must be creative and entrepreneurial and should have excellent human relations skills.
